Market Information
Uganda is one of the countries in sub-Saharan Africa with the most robust electricity sector regulatory environment. This is evidenced by their high ranking in African Development Bank’s Electricity Regulatory Index for Africa for four consecutive times. The country is however yet to achieve universal access to electricity. Their energy investments is therefore geared towards increasing access to 60% of population by 2025 while also increasing transmission capacity and ensuring grid reliability. According to their National Energy Policy (2019), the country aims to reduce the share of biomass energy for cooking to 50% by 2025. Their major source of electricity is hydropower.
With a fully unbundled electricity sector, independent power producers (IPPs) constitute about 60% of Uganda’s generation capacity. A total of thirty-three (33) power plants currently dispatch power to the national grid. They include four (4) large hydropower plants, nineteen (19) small hydropower plants, two (2) thermal (Heavy Fuel Oil – HFO) power plants, three (3) bagasse-based cogeneration power plants, and five (5) Solar PV power plants.
