Tunisia has approved 309 solar photovoltaic (PV) electricity generation projects under the sixth round of its licensing regime, marking another step toward expanding the country’s renewable energy capacity. The Ministry of Industry, Mines, and Energy announced the approvals after completing the evaluation of applications submitted by June 30, 2026.

The approved projects represent a combined capacity of 455 megawatts (MW). The portfolio includes 187 solar PV plants with a capacity of 1 MW each, 119 projects of 2 MW each, and three larger projects with a capacity of 10 MW each.

The licensing regime covers medium-sized electricity generation projects that remain below the capacity limits established under Article 14 of Decree No. 2016-1123. These limits are set at 10 MW for solar projects, 30 MW for wind projects, 15 MW for biomass projects, and 5 MW for other renewable energy technologies.

Tunisia introduced the authorization system to encourage independent electricity generation from renewable energy sources and increase private-sector participation in the power sector. Under the framework, private investors and industrial operators can develop solar PV plants ranging from 1 MW to 10 MW and sell their entire electricity production to the Tunisian Electricity and Gas Company (STEG).
