Malawi Launches First Utility-Scale Battery Storage System To Strengthen Clean Energy Grid
Malawi has officially launched its first utility-scale battery energy storage system, marking an important step toward strengthening the country’s electricity network and expanding the use of clean energy. The 20-megawatt, 40-megawatt-hour battery facility is located in Kanengo, Lilongwe, and was developed through a partnership between the Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi and the Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet.
The project was supported by a $20 million grant from the Alliance and is among the first large-scale battery storage systems in Southern Africa designed specifically to improve grid stability. It aims to solve one of Malawi’s biggest energy challenges: the difficulty of delivering available electricity to consumers because of weaknesses in the transmission network.
In recent years, Malawi has increased its renewable energy generation, especially from solar power. However, limited transmission capacity has often prevented the country from using all the electricity produced. As a result, utilities were sometimes forced to reduce clean energy generation while depending on costly diesel generators to maintain supply during periods of high demand.
The new battery system will help address this problem by storing excess electricity when renewable energy production is high and releasing it when demand increases. This will create a more stable power supply, reduce waste of renewable energy, and improve the reliability of the national grid.
Officials estimate that the battery facility could help unlock about 100 megawatts of renewable electricity that was previously unavailable because of grid limitations. The project is also expected to reduce diesel use and prevent more than 10,000 metric tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions every year. Lower dependence on imported diesel will help reduce operating costs for the national utility and protect consumers from rising fuel prices.
