Zimbabwe: Matshela Energy to develop 100MW solar PV plant

South African independent power producer (IPP) Matshela Energy has signed a power purchase agreement (PPA) with the Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company (ZETDC) to develop a 100MW solar PV plant and 40MWh battery storage facility.

Former Eskom chief executive Matshela Koko owns the IPP, which was licensed in 2019. The facilities will be located at Gwanda Timber Farm in Matebeleland South province’s Gwanda district and produce 220GWh of electricity for the national grid.

Financial close on the project is expected in June 2023. The IPP hopes to conclude a government support agreement in 180 days from the signature date. This contract will outline terms for the government to provide incentives and assistance to the IPP.

The Gwanda power station will be the largest solar and battery storage project in energy-short Zimbabwe, which has mostly experienced the development of small solar PV projects. Gwanda is the same district where Intratrek Zimbabwe and partner Chint Electric Group of China have failed to construct the 100MW Gwanda Solar PV for the Zimbabwe Power company (AE 429/11).
