TotalEnergies, Morocco Team Up for Green Hydrogen Breakthrough

TotalEnergies and Morocco have teamed up to develop a massive green hydrogen project in the Guelmin-Oued Noun region. The “Chbika” project aims to produce green ammonia for export to Europe, reinforcing energy ties between Morocco and the continent.

French President Emmanuel Macron’s visit to Rabat saw TotalEnergies sign a land reservation contract with Morocco. This move launches the project, which focuses on harnessing renewable energy sources.

The project’s first phase will establish 1 GW of solar and onshore wind power. These renewable sources will power the electrolysis process that converts desalinated seawater into green hydrogen. TotalEnergies plans to convert the hydrogen into green ammonia, with a target production of 200,000 tons annually.

TotalEnergies will supply green ammonia to European markets, strengthening Morocco’s role as a critical renewable energy exporter. Before advancing to infrastructure development, the company will conduct studies to finalise the project.

A consortium will lead the project. TE H2, co-founded by TotalEnergies and Austria’s EREN, will work alongside Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP), an expert in wind energy. Together, they will develop solar, wind, and hydrogen production facilities. Meanwhile, Danish shipping company A.P. Møller Capital will handle the construction of the port and logistics infrastructure for green ammonia transport.

This project fits into TotalEnergies’ broader strategy to tap into renewable energy sources in regions like Morocco. The company aims to utilise Morocco’s competitive renewable energy advantage to supply Europe with green energy.

TotalEnergies views the Chbika project as a stepping stone toward establishing Morocco as a green hydrogen hub. The Guelmin-Oued Noun region offers great potential for large-scale green hydrogen production, which would benefit Morocco and Europe.
