Oikocredit and GCPF invest USD10 million in Sawa Energy to support expansion of commercial and industrial solar projects in Africa
Oikocredit has partnered with the Global Climate Partnership Fund (GCPF) to provide a USD 10 million debt facility to Sawa Energy, a leading developer and operator of commercial and industrial (C&I) solar and battery systems in East Africa.
The facility will enable Sawa Energy to scale the rollout of distributed solar and battery systems for commercial and industrial clients, supporting businesses seeking reliable and cost-effective alternatives to grid electricity and diesel generation. The facility is expected to support the deployment of 35MW of solar capacity across 250 projects for Commercial and Industrial (C&I) businesses in East Africa over the next 36 months.
Across East Africa, businesses face rising electricity tariffs, grid instability, and reliance on costly diesel generation. Sawa Energy addresses these challenges by providing fully financed solar energy systems under long-term service agreements, allowing companies to access reliable, clean energy without upfront capital investment while reducing electricity costs, promoting sustainable growth, and lowering carbon emissions.
Sawa Energy develops, finances, builds, owns, and operates solar photovoltaic and energy storage systems for commercial and industrial clients under long-term service contracts typically ranging from 10 to 25 years. Through this model, businesses gain access to competitively priced electricity compared to grid or diesel alternatives without the need for upfront investment.
The company also provides full operations and maintenance services throughout the contract period to ensure high system reliability and optimal performance.
To date, Sawa Energy has deployed over 65 solar installations across Rwanda and Uganda, serving clients across sectors including agro-processing, manufacturing, mining, hospitality, education, and commercial real estate. The company is actively expanding its portfolio and developing additional projects across East and Southern Africa.
By replacing diesel generation and reducing reliance on fossil-fuel-based power, Sawa Energy’s projects contribute to meaningful reductions in carbon emissions while supporting private-sector growth and job creation in the region.
